Shravanabelagola is located in the midst of two in the Hassan district 158 km from Bangalore. There is a tank in the midst of this town called "Belagola" and the town is called by the same name. It is 8 miles from Channarayapatna. Shravanabelagola is a major pilgrim
pilgrim centre for Jains. Their Guru resides here in a Mutt. There is a Sanskrit Patashala to study Sanskrit.
There are ancient monuments in and around Shravanabelagola. There are monuments of rare excellence and skill builtunder the patronage of the illustrious Gangas and Hoysalas who had profound sense of duty and ardent devotion to their religion. The chief monuments are found in two sacred hills known as the Vindhyagiri and the Chandragiri. The major attraction in Shravanabelagola lies in Vindhyagiri.
The Vindhyagiri hill is about 470 feet above the ground. and is one solid rock. About 500 steps have been cutout in the rock. The statue of Sri Gomateshwara is erected here. The statue a simple, gigantic 57 feet high monolithic structure has no parallels in size in the whole world. Thousands of devoteed flock here during Mahamasthakabhisheka Mahamasthakabhisheka, the head anointing ceremony is performed once in 12 years to the statue of Lord Bahubali. In 2006 this head anointing was held for 9 days unlike the previous editions where the anointing was for only a single day. Just opposite to the Vindhyagiri a small hill is Chandragiri . Steps have been cut out in this hill and the ascent is not difficult. There are seven monuments of interest here. The Cave of Bhadrabahu where the sacred feet of Sritakavalli are being worshipped even now. Other important spots here in Shravanabelagola is Kuge Brahmadevara Kambha, Bharateshwara, Mahanavami Mantapa, Parshwanatha & Manasthambha Basadi. Shravanabelagola today is a major tourist destination in Karnataka and to cater the tourists there are many hotels in Shravanabelagola.
